In 2007, 2946 people were killed on the UK roads (DfT). It is estimated that one three involved somebody on work business – approx 1000.

66% of company cars are subject to an insurance claim – each year. There are 1000s of other incidents which do not result in a claim but still cost money.

Company car and van drivers covering more than 25000 miles pa are at virtually the same risk of being killed at work as coal miners and construction workers.

About 300 people are killed per year as a result of someone falling asleep at the wheel – about 40% of these crashes involve a commercial vehicle.

Five times more people are killed while driving for work than in any other industrial accident.

Company car drivers have about 50% more crashes than ordinary drivers – even after allowing for their higher mileage.

The largest commercial vehicles are involved in a significantly high proportion of deaths. The fatality rate among crashes involving trucks is more than one and a half times as high as crashes involving cars or all motor vehicles on average.

 

Drivers covering more than 40000 miles pa are more likely to:

  • overtake when they can’t see what’s coming
  • drive while tired
  • use a mobile phone while driving
  • fall asleep at the wheel
